Prince Oscar Carl August Bernadotte was a member of the Swedish royal family who became known for his religious activity, naval service and a personal choice that removed him from the line of succession. The second son of King Oscar II, he served for 25 years in the Swedish Navy, reaching the rank of vice admiral, and traveled extensively, including a circumnavigation aboard the sailing ship Vanadis (1883–1885). He became especially known for his work in ecumenical Christian organizations — he chaired the YMCA of Sweden and Friends of Mission to the Laps, and founded the Södertälje Conferences in 1898, inspired by the Keswick Convention. He was the only member of the Swedish royal family of his time publicly known as “born again” and gained a reputation as an interdenominational lay preacher. In 1888 he married Ebba Munck af Fulkila without the required royal approval, renouncing his succession rights and the title Prince of Sweden and Norway. The couple later received noble titles from Luxembourg — Prince and Countess Bernadotte and Count/Countess of Wisborg — and maintained residences in Karlskrona, Stockholm and Gotland. His legacy combines military service, intense dedication to religious and social causes, and a marriage that brought him closer to the public, making him a singular figure in the modern history of the Swedish monarchy.
