Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt was a member of the former ruling family of the Grand Duchy of Hesse, belonging to the Hesse-Darmstadt line derived from the House of Hesse. The son of the last reigning grand duke, Ernest Louis, he became head of the house after the death of his elder brother in 1937, when he assumed the claims to the now-extinct Grand Duchy of Hesse and the Rhine. His married life was marked by his 1937 wedding in London to Margaret Campbell Geddes and by family adoptions in the face of personal tragedies — the 1938 adoption of his orphaned niece Johanna, who died two years later, and the 1960 adoption of his cousin Maurice of Hesse-Kassel, a figure who helped unite the claims of the Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt lines. In the dynastic context of the post-monarchy era, Louis served a symbolic role as the last head of the direct Hesse-Darmstadt line; with his death in 1968 without a male heir that line became extinct, transferring the grand ducal claims to the House of Hesse-Kassel, whose subsequent head consolidated the dynastic succession.
