Friedrich Wilhelm of Nassau-Weilburg was Prince of Nassau-Weilburg at the end of the 18th century and the start of the 19th. The eldest surviving son of Prince Charles Christian and Princess Wilhelmina Carolina of Orange‑Nassau, he belonged to a line connected to the House of Orange and, through his mother, to the British royal family. He succeeded his father in 1788, the same year he married Luise Isabelle, Burgravine of Kirchberg, with whom he had four children, including William, the future Duke of Nassau. In 1806 he received the title Prince of Nassau, during a period of reorganization of the German states amid the Napoleonic Wars. He died in January 1816, shortly before his cousin and co‑sovereign Frederick Augustus of Nassau‑Usingen; both were succeeded by his son William, who went on to unite the branches of the family government. Friedrich Wilhelm’s legacy lies chiefly in dynastic continuity and the marital alliances that strengthened the House of Nassau’s regional position. His descendants continued to play a significant role in the European aristocracy throughout the 19th century.
