Astrid of Sweden was Queen Consort of the Belgians from 1934 to 1935 as the wife of King Leopold III. Born into the Swedish royal family, she became known for an approachable, unpretentious image: raised for practical living, she devoted herself to visits to hospitals and day‑care centers and to social initiatives aimed at workers and the most vulnerable families. This stance helped make her a highly popular figure in a short time. Married in 1926, Astrid balanced dynastic duties with a liberal approach to family life, raising her children with affection and minimal ceremonial strictness. The couple undertook official trips abroad and maintained a public presence marked by cordiality and attention to citizens, which secured her national standing. Her tragic death in August 1935, in a car accident in Switzerland, had a strong public and symbolic impact, provoking widespread mourning in Belgium and inspiring numerous memorials in her honor. Her legacy endures in popular memory as an example of a queen close to the people and committed to social causes.
