Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston was a Scottish diplomat and colonial administrator whose career intersected decisively with early twentieth‑century Chinese history. Educated at Oxford and long active in the British colonial service, he became known as a scholar of China and the author of travel accounts and works on Buddhism and Chinese society. He also served as the last British commissioner of Weihaiwei. In 1919 he became tutor and adviser to Puyi, the last Qing emperor, joining life in the Imperial Palace as a rare foreigner admitted to the inner court. In that role Johnston combined educational and intermediary functions, recording the decay and corruption of the palace apparatus and introducing practical modernizations to the young sovereign’s life. After Puyi’s expulsion from the Palace, Johnston maintained ties with the former emperor and continued to hold diplomatic and academic posts, including the governorship of Weihaiwei and, in 1931, the chair of Chinese at the University of London (SOAS), where he bequeathed his significant library of more than 16,000 volumes. Author of Twilight in the Forbidden City (1934) and other works, Johnston left valuable testimony on the end of the Chinese monarchy and on encounters between European colonial administrations and Asian traditions, while his personal life remained marked by discreet choices and a deep intellectual engagement with Asia.
