Edward V, also known as Edward of York, was titular king of England for a few weeks in 1483, succeeding his father Edward IV at the age of twelve. Never crowned, his reign was dominated by his uncle, the Duke of Gloucester, who was named Lord Protector and shortly thereafter deposed him in his own favour, becoming Richard III; this act was formalized by the Titulus Regius, later annulled by Parliament under Henry VII. A prince educated under scholarly supervision, he was prepared for government and diplomatic duties — including a dynastic betrothal to the heiress of Brittany — and spent part of his youth in Ludlow, where he received detailed instruction in morals and study. Contemporary sources praise his learning and composure beyond his years. Edward and his younger brother, Richard of Shrewsbury, became known as the “Princes in the Tower” after being held in the Tower of London and disappearing from the public record at the end of 1483. Responsibility for their disappearance is traditionally attributed to Richard III, but the lack of conclusive evidence and contradictory accounts make the episode a matter of historical controversy. The brief reign and fate of the brothers affected dynastic succession and the political memory of the closing phase of the Wars of the Roses, contributing to Henry VII’s rise and the founding of the Tudor dynasty.
