Manuel II was the last King of Portugal and the Algarves, ascending the throne in 1908 after the regicide that killed his father and brother. Trained in a traditional education with a leaning toward literature and music, he was preparing for a naval career when events placed the Crown on his shoulders at age 18. He adopted a moderate constitutional stance — “the king reigns, but does not govern” — avoiding direct interventions in the Executive and seeking to calm the political tensions then afflicting the country.
During his short reign he focused on the so-called Social Question, promoting measures to bring the regime closer to urban workers and encouraging dialogue with the Socialist Party, including by facilitating the visit of sociologist Léon Poinsard to Portugal. These efforts aimed to divert popular support away from republicanism, although political instability and the economic crisis weakened the monarchy.
The deposition of 1910 ended his reign and forced him into exile. Despite its brevity, his reign remains associated with an attempt at conciliatory modernization and with the end of the Portuguese monarchy.
