Renée de France (Renata di Francia) was a princess of the French royal house, daughter of Louis XII and Anne of Brittany, who became Duchess of Ferrara by marriage to Ercole II d’Este. In the 16th century she presided over one of Italy’s most brilliant Renaissance courts, attracting nobles, writers and humanists who fostered a lively intellectual environment. Influenced by close figures such as her aunt Marguerite de Navarre and by followers of Lefèvre d’Étaples, Renée drew near the ideas of the Protestant Reformation. She received figures like Clément Marot and John Calvin, whose presence and preaching at the court of Ferrara shaped her religious and cultural course. That adherence provoked tensions with Catholic authorities, culminating in temporary imprisonments of associates and pressure from her husband and Church representatives. Widowed in 1559, she returned to France in 1560 after conflicts with her son Alfonso II d’Este and settled in Montargis. In the following years she supported the Protestant party during the French Wars of Religion, maintaining correspondence and ties with reformist leaders. Her legacy combines Renaissance cultural patronage with a notable confessional resistance during a period of sharp religious convulsions.
