Richard Folsom Cleveland was an American lawyer and civic leader whose career left a mark at the Baltimore law firm Semmes, Bowen & Semmes, where he practiced from 1924 until his formal retirement in 1969 and remained as counsel until his death. The son of President Grover Cleveland, he graduated from Princeton, served in the military and in diplomatic roles during the First World War, and completed his legal studies at Harvard. His work became best known when he represented journalist Whittaker Chambers in the famous case involving Alger Hiss (1948–1950). Contemporary accounts emphasize his discretion, legal acumen, and personal support for clients during crucial moments of the litigation—qualities that earned him a reputation as a measured and influential lawyer in the regional legal community. Active on public issues, he supported presidential campaigns of different persuasions and in 1967 served as a delegate to Maryland’s constitutional convention. Also noted for his family connection to the presidential legacy, he kept furniture from the White House in his office, a symbol of his professional continuity and historical memory.
