Robert Falcon Scott was an officer in the Royal Navy and one of the best-known polar explorers of the early 20th century. He led the Discovery Expedition (1901–1904) and the Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913), undertakings that marked the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration and established his public reputation in the United Kingdom. On the Terra Nova Expedition, Scott led a party of five men who reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find they had been preceded by the Norwegian expedition of Roald Amundsen. On the return journey, Scott and his four companions died from a combination of exhaustion, starvation and extreme cold, an episode that turned his career into a national drama. During his naval career, Scott sought personal distinction within a Victorian context of competitive professional advancement; command of the Discovery presented an opportunity to raise his standing. After his death he became a national hero for decades, although his legacy has been reappraised by historians who weigh command mistakes alongside the courage and stoicism he displayed.
