Robin Moore was an American writer known for non-fiction works and for portraying specialized military units. He rose to prominence with The Green Berets (1965), based on his experience with the 5th Special Forces Group; the book led to adaptations and helped shape the public image of the U.S. Special Forces, including the song "The Ballad of the Green Berets," for which he co-wrote the lyrics, and the 1968 film of the same name that involved John Wayne. A Harvard graduate and a World War II veteran, Moore spent decades writing about conflicts and international settings — among them the Cuban revolution, Rhodesia, Russia, and the post-9/11 wars. He published titles such as The French Connection, The Hunt for Bin Laden, and works on Rhodesia; he also collaborated on memoirs and on journalistic accounts that mixed investigation with war narrative. His career included controversies: in 1986 he admitted involvement in a tax-evasion scheme related to literary royalties and received an alternative sentence; later, parts of his work on the hunt for Bin Laden lost credibility when sources were discredited. Despite this, he retained recognition among Special Forces veterans and is remembered for influencing military representation in the popular imagination.
