Roger Sessions was an American composer, teacher, and music theorist whose work influenced twentieth-century contemporary music. Beginning in a neoclassical vein, he moved toward post‑Romantic chromaticism and later to an atonal and serial language, adapting dodecaphonic technique to a personal style in which tone rows functioned primarily as melodic seed material while subsidiary parts were freely composed. Over decades, Sessions held professorships at influential institutions — including Princeton, Berkeley, and Juilliard — training generations of musicians and establishing his reputation as an educator and musical thinker. His friendship with Arnold Schoenberg and his theoretical reflections contributed to the critical reception of his work. He received significant public recognition relatively late in life: medals and major prizes culminating in a Pulitzer Prize (1982) for the Concerto for Orchestra, together with a special award in 1974 honoring his career. His output includes symphonies, chamber music, concertos, and essays on harmonic practice and musical experience, leaving a legacy that remains the subject of study and performance in contemporary repertoires.
