Rusty Schweickart is an aerospace engineer and former American astronaut who also worked as a research scientist, U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, and public- and private-sector executive. Selected with NASA’s third astronaut group in 1963, he served as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 9 (March 1969), the first crewed flight to test the Lunar Module in orbit, and conducted the first extravehicular test of the portable life-support system used on later moonwalks. His flight career also included a key role as backup commander for the first crewed Skylab mission (1973), during which he helped develop hardware and procedures for critical in-orbit repairs after launch damage. He later held management positions at NASA, including Director of User Affairs, promoting the transfer of space technologies to terrestrial applications. After leaving the agency in 1977, Schweickart served as science and technology advisor to the governor of California and as a member and chair of the state energy commission. A co-founder of the Association of Space Explorers and, in 2002, of the B612 Foundation, he devoted himself to planetary defense against asteroid impacts, building a technical and institutional legacy in space exploration and cosmic-risk mitigation.
