Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist whose work gained prominence in the early decades of the 20th century. Best known for his refined woodcuts, he also worked in etching, lithography, watercolor and drawing, and produced designs for decorative objects. His work includes depictions of birds, exotic animals, plants and fantastic figures, blending humor with darker tones, and showing particular strength in portraits and self-portraits. As a teacher and mentor, de Mesquita trained generations of artists, including M. C. Escher, and took part in important exhibitions of his time, among them Onze Kunst van Heden at the Rijksmuseum in 1939. His precise line work and the way he handled line and surface are hallmarks of his artistic inquiry, which moved between fine arts and applied arts. Despite recognition among collectors and institutions — his works are held in collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art — de Mesquita’s career and life were tragically cut short by Nazi persecution. Deported with his family, he was murdered at Auschwitz in 1944. After the war, friends and students recovered part of his work, and his oeuvre has been reappraised in contemporary publications and exhibitions.
