Saul Aaron Kripke was an American philosopher and logician whose work decisively shaped twentieth-century analytic philosophy. A professor at Princeton and CUNY, he became known for pioneering contributions to modal logic and the philosophy of language, formulating a semantics for modal logics that became a standard reference and gave its name to logic K. He received the Schock Prize in Logic and Philosophy in 2001.

His lectures Naming and Necessity (1970) renewed the debate on reference and proper names: there he defended the notion of rigid designators and proposed the historical-chain theory of reference, criticizing descriptivist accounts associated with readings of Frege and Russell. He also introduced the influential distinction between necessary a posteriori and contingent a priori, illustrated by examples such as the identity of the planet Venus and the chemical formula of water.

Kripke also criticized materialist accounts of the mind and produced work on fictional names and perceptual error in later lectures. Much of his output remains in recordings and unpublished manuscripts, but his influence spans logic, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of mind, affecting generations of philosophers.
