Sonia Darrin (born Sonia Paskowitz) was an American actress whose film and television career is best known for her portrayal of Agnes Lowzier in The Big Sleep (1946). The daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants, she began as a dancer and moved into film in the early 1940s, appearing in titles such as The Hard Way (1943) and Lady in the Dark (1944). Her role in The Big Sleep, one of the masterpieces of film noir directed by Howard Hawks, cemented her image as a femme fatale, although in the film’s original release she was not given on-screen credit—an omission attributed to backstage disputes between her agent and the studio’s top executives. Years later she reprised the character in a 1950 television adaptation, receiving credit for the performance then. In addition to film, she worked in television alongside prominent names of the era and maintained a sporadic public presence in subsequent decades. Her career reflects both the opportunities and the limitations faced by character actresses in Hollywood’s studio era, and her cultural legacy remains primarily associated with The Big Sleep.
