Stanley Phillips Frankel was an American computer scientist whose career linked wartime nuclear research to the early days of digital computing and electronic calculators. Trained as a physicist, he worked in the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos, where he developed computational techniques for neutron-diffusion problems and organized manual computing teams that progressed to punched‑card machines and later to programming the ENIAC. That experience sparked his interest in digital computers and numerical methods. After losing his security clearance in the 1950s, he worked as an independent consultant on computing projects. He designed CONAC for Continental Oil and developed the MINAC, which led to the LGP-30, a commercially modestly successful desk computer. He also consulted on projects such as the PB-250. Frankel also devoted himself to developing electronic desktop calculators, creating microcoded architectures like the NIC‑NAC that formed the basis for the Diehl Combitron and related models marketed in Europe. He published articles on numerical methods, statistical sampling and proposals for digital storage, contributing to techniques now part of the repertoire of scientific computing and microprogrammed systems.
