Stefania Belmondo is one of the greatest Italian cross-country skiers in history, with a career defined by consistency and high-level results in the 1990s and the early 2000s. During her career she won ten Olympic medals (including two golds) and thirteen World Championship medals, and she achieved twenty-two World Cup victories, making her the Italian with the most wins on the international circuit. Raised on the tracks of Valle Stura, she was notable for her versatility in long-distance races and pursuits, regularly reaching the World Cup overall podium and taking the Sprint Cup in 1997. She struggled with and overcame physical problems that threatened her competitive career, sustaining elite performance and returning to win significant titles, including Olympic gold at Salt Lake City 2002. After retiring from competition, she worked in environmental protection agencies connected to the police forces and became a ski race commentator for the Italian public broadcaster. Her achievements have been honored with national awards and tributes, including a plaque on the Walk of Fame of Italian sport, recognizing her contribution to cross-country skiing and to sport in Italy.
