Sultan Mehmed V (Mehmed bin Abdul Mecid) was the 35th and penultimate sovereign of the Ottoman Empire, ruling from 1909 to 1918 as a constitutional monarch who served largely in a ceremonial capacity. He ascended the throne after the deposition of Abdul Hamid II during the events of 31 March 1909, amid a period of intense political instability that characterized his reign: coups, frequent changes of government, and successive military crises.
His reign coincided with territorial losses and with the political rise and dominance of the Committee of Union and Progress and the so-called Three Pashas. Decisive events occurred in its early years, such as the Italo-Turkish War and the Balkan Wars, which led to the loss of vast European and North African provinces of the Empire. Ottoman entry into World War I in 1914 prompted a declaration of jihad and military campaigns that achieved notable successes at moments—such as Gallipoli and Kut—but ended in strategic collapse.
Mehmed V is remembered as a sovereign with limited authority, whose symbolic role persisted while crucial decisions were made by military leaders and the CUP’s rulers. His reign became associated with the final decline of the Ottoman Empire and the political and territorial transformations that preceded its disappearance after the First World War.
