Tamzin Outhwaite is an English actress best known nationally for playing Melanie “Mel” Owen in the BBC soap EastEnders, a role she played from 1998 to 2002 and reprised from 2018 to 2019. Over her career she has worked across television and theatre, with notable appearances in series such as Red Cap, Hotel Babylon and New Tricks, and leading roles in productions like the science-fiction series Paradox. A graduate in drama and dance from the London Studio Centre, she began in theatre in musicals including Grease and Oliver! before moving into television. Her versatility has also led to film work (Cassandra’s Dream), appearances on reality and competition programmes such as Over the Rainbow, and performances in digital projects during the pandemic. Off-screen, Outhwaite remains connected to London theatre, serving as an ambassador for the Park Theatre, and continues to perform in the West End. Her career shows an ability to take on both popular soap roles and character parts on stage and screen, establishing her as a familiar figure in contemporary British entertainment.
