Benjamin Franklin “Tex” Logan Jr. was an electrical engineer and a prominent musician in the American bluegrass movement. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech and completed a master’s and Ph.D. in engineering while working at Bell Labs and Columbia. He contributed to signal theory and to the use of computer simulations in studying reverberation in digital audio, collaborating with researchers who later influenced the development of audio compression formats. At Bell Labs he worked in the communication theory and mathematics departments from the 1960s through the 1990s, producing technical work on signal properties and audio processing. Alongside his scientific career he remained an active musician: he played fiddle on recordings and international tours with artists such as Bill Monroe, Mike Seeger, and Peter Rowan. As a songwriter he wrote “Christmas Time’s A-Comin’,” a song adopted by well-known country and bluegrass artists, and his compositions were recorded by figures including Bob Dylan. His legacy includes significant contributions to both audio engineering and the American bluegrass tradition.
