George Thomas “Tom” Shires was an American surgeon whose research on the physiology of shock redefined the management of surgical and trauma patients, establishing the routine use of intravenous saline. A professor and chair of surgery at several institutions—including the University of Texas Southwestern, Cornell University Medical College, and Texas Tech—Shires also led the development of specialized centers, notably founding a burn center at Cornell that gained international recognition. Over his career he published and edited authoritative works on surgery and trauma, including editions of the classic Principles of Surgery, and made significant contributions in areas such as burn treatment, severe exfoliative syndromes, and responses to endotoxins. He was honored by surgical societies and served as president of major organizations such as the American College of Surgeons and the American Surgical Association. Beyond his scientific work and teaching, Shires helped organize emergency services and paramedic systems, initially in Dallas. His role in historical events included serving as chief of surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital during the emergency response to the 1963 assassination. He is remembered for the lasting impact of his findings on contemporary clinical practice.
