Tony Conigliaro was an American professional baseball player, known for his time as an outfielder with the Boston Red Sox and, more briefly, with the California Angels. Breaking in very young, he made an immediate impact: he became the youngest player to reach 100 career home runs in American League history and led the league in home runs in 1965. His early success suggested a long, star-filled career in the sport. In 1967, during the Red Sox’s “Impossible Dream” season, Conigliaro suffered a severe facial injury when he was hit by a pitch; the blow fractured his face and damaged his retina, impairing his vision. The injury interrupted his career—he missed the entire 1968 season—and significantly altered his performance and potential thereafter. He made a notable comeback in 1969 and posted strong numbers in 1970, but could not regain his previous form. Traded to the California Angels in 1971, he produced a modest season and retired soon after. His case drew attention within the sport for safety concerns and the long-term effects of an eye injury, leaving him remembered as an early talent whose career was deeply changed by an on-field accident.
