Antonio Joseph “Tony” Mendez was a CIA technical operations officer who specialized in supporting clandestine and covert actions through document forgery, disguises, and exfiltration techniques. Originally trained in art, he worked as an illustrator and designer before joining the agency’s Technical Services Division, where he applied his artistic skills to intelligence operations in multiple regions, including Asia and the Middle East. His public notoriety stems from his field command of the so-called “Canadian Caper” during the Iran hostage crisis in 1980, when he organized the exit of six American diplomats by having them pose as a Canadian film crew. For that episode he received the Intelligence Star, and his account contributed to the book and eventual screenplay of the film Argo (2012), which brought the operation international attention. After retiring in 1990, Mendez remained active publicly as an author of espionage memoirs and as a member of the board of the International Spy Museum. He published four books, including technical accounts of disguises and his experiences in the service. His career is remembered for the creative use of artistic techniques in intelligence operations and for his contribution to contemporary espionage literature.
