Giovanna di Savoia was a princess of the House of Savoy who, upon marrying Boris III, became consort to the Bulgarian monarch and the country’s last queen. The daughter of King Victor Emmanuel III and Queen Elena of Montenegro, she received the polished, multilingual education typical of early 20th-century European aristocracy, with studies in languages, sciences and music, and a court life shaped by travel and royal receptions. Her marriage to Boris III tied her to a dynasty confronting the political upheavals of the interwar years and the aftermath of World War I. As queen and mother of the future tsar Simeon II, Giovanna played a central role in ensuring dynastic continuity amid the wider decline of monarchies in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.
