Vincent Ludwig Persichetti was an American composer, pianist, and teacher prominent in the 20th century. Recognized both for his compositions and his long pedagogical career, he played a central role in training generations of composers at the Curtis Institute, the Philadelphia Conservatory, and—for more than forty years—the Juilliard School. His editorial work also helped disseminate contemporary music. As a composer, Persichetti drew on multiple currents of the 20th century—from Stravinsky and Bartók to elements of jazz and the big band—developing a personal language that blended lyrical passages with rhythmic, incisive material. He produced an extensive body of piano music, including twelve sonatas and a celebrated Piano Concerto for Four Hands, as well as nine symphonies (two of which were withdrawn) and chamber works. He is also notable for his contributions to the wind-band repertoire: his 14 works for wind band, such as the Divertimento for Band and Symphony No. 6 for band, have become standard choices in school and university study. His liturgical cantata Hymns and Responses for the Church Year has entered church choral repertory. The combination of creative output, commitment to teaching, and editorial involvement made Persichetti an influential figure in the consolidation of contemporary American music and in the education of important postwar musicians.
