William Marvin Watson was an American political adviser and public administrator, known for his close role with President Lyndon B. Johnson. Trained as an economist with an MBA from Baylor University, he served as an informal adviser to Johnson from the 1948 and 1960 campaigns, becoming a central figure in the Democratic political machine in Texas and in Washington during the 1960s. As White House appointments secretary from 1965, Watson functioned in practice as a chief of staff, coordinating the political maneuvering necessary to enact much of the Great Society domestic agenda. His work required intense daily involvement in presidential affairs and crisis management, a position that made him a key member of the Johnson administration. In April 1968 he was named Postmaster General, a cabinet-level position he held through the end of the Johnson administration; he was later the last person to have held that rank to remain alive until his death. After 1969 he moved to the private sector, joining Occidental Petroleum, and declined an invitation to serve as ambassador to Australia in order to prioritize his family. In academic and institutional life, he served as president of Dallas Baptist College from 1979 to 1987. His career is marked by a long association with Johnson, influence in Texas party organization, and direct participation in implementing the domestic policies of the 1960s.
