Walter Ruttmann was a German filmmaker and a central figure in the early 20th-century cinematic avant-garde. Trained in architecture and painting, he began professionally as a graphic designer before carrying those visual references into experimental film. His early abstract films, such as Lichtspiel: Opus I (1921) and Opus II (1923), explored novel formal languages and influenced contemporaries like Oskar Fischinger. In the late 1920s he established himself with Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Großstadt (1927), a work that engages with urban modernism and the collective experience of the metropolis, and with Melodie der Welt (1929), which integrates image and sound in aesthetic experimentation. Ruttmann also investigated sound montage, notable for works that anticipated non-narrative sound cinema. During the 1930s he produced documentaries and institutional films and, within Germany’s political context, worked at times as an assistant on official productions. He died in 1941 while working as a war photographer. His legacy endures in his formal pioneering and his influence on later generations of experimental film.
