Wilkie Collins was an English writer whose work helped shape the modern detective novel and Victorian suspense fiction. The author of 27 novels, more than 50 short stories and numerous plays and essays, he achieved wide renown with The Woman in White (1859) and The Moonstone (1868), the latter often cited as a landmark in the origin of the detective novel. His prose combined courtroom intrigue, social observation and legal knowledge he had acquired while studying law, elements that recur throughout his narratives. Collaborations with Charles Dickens were a defining feature of his career: beyond a personal friendship, they worked together on plays and joint publications, expanding his readership and influence. The commercial success of Collins’s works, particularly abroad, provided him with financial stability from the 1860s onward. At the same time, health problems — including gout attacks — and the use of opium for pain relief affected his personal life and productivity in subsequent decades. Noted for blending investigative technique with social sensitivity, Collins left a lasting legacy in mystery fiction and the Victorian novel. His influence comes both from inventing conventions of the detective genre and from exploring intimate and legal themes that shaped later generations of novelists.
