William Gibbs McAdoo was an American lawyer and statesman associated with the Progressive movement and the Democratic Party. He rose to prominence around the turn of the century as a business leader—serving as president of the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad—and as a party organizer, acting as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee and as a central figure in the 1912 presidential campaign. Appointed Secretary of the Treasury by Woodrow Wilson (1913–1918), McAdoo led measures crucial to the financial stability of the United States at the outset of World War I, took part in the consolidation of the Federal Reserve, and, after America’s entry into the conflict, also served as Director General of Railroads. His administration sought to coordinate finance and transportation during a period of international tension. After leaving the cabinet he returned to legal practice and retained presidential ambitions at the Democratic conventions of 1920 and 1924, but failed to win the nomination. Relocating to California, he returned to public life by winning election to the Senate in 1932, serving a single term. His legacy combines administrative action in public finance with political influence during the Progressive era and the Wilson years.
