Yannick Bestaven is a French professional navigator and skipper, known for his victories in major ocean races. Trained as an engineer, he co‑designed the Watt&Sea hydrogenerator and has excelled in the Mini 6.50, Class40 and IMOCA classes, winning events such as the Transat 6.50 (2001) and two editions of the Transat Jacques‑Vabre (2011, 2015). His career combines competitive experience with technical involvement in renewable propulsion solutions for yachts.
Over the decades Bestaven has built a steady, advancing career: he moved from the Mini circuit to larger classes, won both double‑handed and solo races and repeatedly contested the Vendée Globe. In 2020–2021 he crossed the Vendée Globe finish line third but was declared the winner after a time compensation was applied for his diversion to take part in search‑and‑rescue operations for a competitor, a decision that reinforced his reputation as a professional and solidaristic sailor.
Beyond sporting results, Bestaven has maintained long‑term partnerships with sponsors that have enabled successive boat renewals, including the move to foiling IMOCA designs. Based in La Rochelle, his career has had both technical and sporting impact, influencing high‑performance yacht projects and promoting renewable energy in ocean sailing.
