A. A. Milne (Alan Alexander Milne) was an English writer whose work spanned genres from theatre to poetry, but whose public renown rests chiefly on the stories of Winnie‑the‑Pooh. Trained in mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, Milne established himself early as a columnist and playwright, contributing to Punch and producing plays and short stories that secured his literary reputation before the Pooh phenomenon.

His experience in both world wars affected his personal life and his work: he served as an officer in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the First World War and worked in propaganda with MI7; in the Second World War he was a captain in the local Home Guard. After the First World War he also wrote about the conflict, in works such as Peace with Honour.

Milne was the father of Christopher Robin, a character who inspired part of his children’s work and helped give the books their emotional appeal. In addition to novels and plays — including Mr. Pim Passes By — he published poetry and memoirs, though some of his output was overshadowed by the worldwide success of Pooh, whose imagery and translatability ensured a lasting influence on children’s literature.
