Alfred Lothar Wegener was a geophysicist, meteorologist and German pioneer of polar research, best known for formulating the hypothesis of continental drift in 1912. His proposal that continents move slowly was met with skepticism by the contemporary geological community, but together with later evidence such as paleomagnetism it became a foundation for the development of plate tectonics.

In addition to his theoretical contributions, Wegener took part in several expeditions to Greenland, where he helped establish the first meteorological station at Danmarkshavn, carried out drilling on moving glaciers and collected observations that advanced the study of polar circulation and high-latitude meteorology. These campaigns also included early experiences of overwintering on the ice cap and provided data that were important to his scientific work.

Trained in physics, meteorology and astronomy, Wegener combined an academic career with practical work at aerological and naval observatories. He published important works, including The Origin of Continents and Oceans, and served as a professor in Marburg and later at the University of Hamburg. His legacy links polar research, meteorology and geophysics, decisively influencing modern understanding of Earth dynamics.
