Anton Flettner was a German engineer and inventor whose work spanned aviation, navigation, and land transport. Originally a teacher, he devoted himself to developing practical devices: from the servo tab that evolved into the trim tabs used on aircraft and large vessels, to pioneering torpedo and remotely controlled vehicle designs during the First World War. In the 1920s he became known for the Flettner rotor, a propulsion system based on the Magnus effect that powered experimental and commercial ships and influenced industrial ventilation solutions. In the 1930s and 1940s he focused on aeronautics, founding companies to develop autogyros and intermeshing-rotor helicopters, such as the Fl 185, Fl 265 and the Fl 282 Kolibri, conceived primarily for naval reconnaissance. His work combined theoretical innovations and partnerships with prominent engineers, producing technical advances used in both military and civilian applications. After the Second World War he emigrated to the United States, where he continued aeronautical research and consultancy for the American armed forces. Although his U.S. companies did not achieve commercial success, his technical legacy—above all the propulsion rotor and contributions to control systems for large surfaces—remains recognized and applied in modern naval and wind-power projects.
