Antonio Canova

Antonio Canova was an Italian sculptor whose work helped establish European Neoclassicism. Trained in Venice and Rome, he became known for an idealized formal language inspired by ancient Greek sculpture, producing marble groups and figures that were soon compared with the finest works of Antiquity. His long and productive career led contemporaries to regard him as the greatest sculptor since Bernini.

Beyond his artistic work, Canova played an important role as an antiquarian and cultural administrator: he served as Inspector-General of Antiquities and Fine Arts for the Papal States, overseeing collections, museums and excavations, and led a papal mission after Napoleon’s fall to recover works taken by the French armies, succeeding in reclaiming pieces of great symbolic value. He also directed the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and supported the training of young artists.

His influence spread across Europe and throughout the nineteenth century, shaping Academic art and attracting artists even from the United States. Although he was temporarily forgotten with the rise of modernism, his importance was reassessed from the twentieth century onward, securing his central place in the history of Western sculpture.
