Arnold Zweig was a German writer of Jewish origin, known for work opposed to war and fascism. Trained in the humanities, he was strongly influenced by Nietzsche and later developed an interest in psychoanalysis, maintaining a long correspondence with Sigmund Freud; several novels reflect this dialogue between literature and therapy. His literary output reached international recognition with The Case of Sergeant Grischa (1927), an antiwar novel that formed part of a sequence on the First World War and cemented his reputation as a critic of militarism and of the elites who steered the conflict toward expansionist ends.

A socialist activist and initially a proponent of a social form of Zionism, Zweig experienced firsthand the effects of antisemitism and Nazi policy: he witnessed the burning of his books in 1933 and went into exile, living in several countries and spending some time in Palestine, where he edited a German-language periodical. His work of the 1930s and ’40s, including The Axe of Wandsbek, deals with contemporary episodes of political violence and questions of morality under authoritarian regimes.

Recognized both for his war fiction and for his public opposition to Nazism, Zweig left a legacy as a critical narrator of Germany’s twentieth-century contradictions and as an intellectual who linked literature, politics, and psychoanalysis.
