Jiles Perry Richardson Jr., known by the stage name The Big Bopper, was an American musician, songwriter and disc jockey whose career flourished in the late 1950s. From southeast Texas, he began in radio and soon moved into songwriting, penning hits recorded by other artists such as “White Lightning” (recorded by George Jones) and “Running Bear” (recorded by Johnny Preston). As a performer, he rose to prominence with “Chantilly Lace,” the single from his 1958 debut album, which entered the Top 10 and sold over a million copies. His radio persona and theatrical style—blending humor and character work—made him a popular figure on local and national stations and positioned him as a pioneer in music-video-style productions. Richardson also worked as a programmer and director at radio stations, and he had ongoing studio projects and unpublished compositions at the time of his death. His career was cut short in February 1959 when he died in a plane crash that also killed other artists. The Big Bopper’s legacy rests both in the hits he wrote for colleagues and in his brief but influential career as a singer and radio personality.
