Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was an Indian physicist whose research on light scattering became a milestone in modern optics. In 1930 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the effect that bears his name — a change in the wavelength of light when it passes through a medium — becoming the first scientist from the Asian continent to win the award. His research on light–matter interactions played a central role in bringing international recognition to science in India in the early twentieth century. Raman earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Presidency College, where he early attracted attention with his publications and the interest of European physicists such as Lord Rayleigh. Over the course of his career he held academic and institutional positions that placed him at the center of India’s scientific development, influenced generations of researchers, and established his own laboratories. Official honors included, in addition to the Nobel, the Bharat Ratna in 1954 and the Lenin Peace Prize in 1957. He is also remembered for promoting experimental research in India and for a scientific legacy that lives on in spectroscopic techniques and applications in physics and chemistry.
