Louis I of Guise, born Louis de Lorraine, was a cardinal and a prominent member of the French high nobility in the 16th century. The son of Duke Claude of Guise and Antoinette de Bourbon-Vendôme, he belonged to an influential family whose members combined military and ecclesiastical careers and played a decisive role in the religious and dynastic politics of Renaissance France. He entered the clergy at a young age and accumulated several sees and abbeys through administrations and commendatory appointments: he was elected bishop of Troyes while still a teenager, held the abbacy of Saint-Victor in Paris and the see of Albi, was made a cardinal-deacon in 1553 and later promoted to the order of cardinal-priests. He also presided over the metropolitan archdiocese of Sens and, with chapter consent, was transferred to the see of Metz. He took part in several conclaves of the period and had ceremonial roles in royal events, including the coronation of Henry III. His career exemplifies the practice of aristocratic families accumulating ecclesiastical offices under the Ancien Régime; he died in Paris and was buried at the abbey of Saint-Victor.
