Carl-Heinrich von Stülpnagel was a German Army general whose career spanned the First and Second World Wars. After joining the armed forces in 1904, he served as an officer in the First World War and remained in the Reichswehr, rising gradually to senior posts during the interwar period and the early years of the Third Reich, including vice chief of the Army General Staff. At the start of the Second World War he commanded the 17th Army during operations in the Soviet Union, taking part in the battles of Uman and Kiev. As a commander on the Eastern Front, his actions were connected with repressive measures against civilians and with a permissive stance toward the actions of the Einsatzgruppen, according to contemporary investigations. From 1942, while serving as the military head of the occupation in France, he drew closer to circles of resistance against Hitler and began collaborating with conspirators such as Caesar von Hofacker and Claus von Stauffenberg. In July 1944 he took part in the plot that sought to depose Hitler; after the assassination attempt failed he was arrested, wounded himself in an attempted suicide, and, brought before the People’s Court, was sentenced and executed on 30 August 1944. His legacy is marked by the ambivalence between a high‑level military career and a belated commitment to the resistance, coinciding with his involvement in occupation policies and wartime repression.
