Carl Edward Sagan was an American planetary scientist, astronomer, astrobiologist, astrophysicist, author, science communicator, and activist.
He was a strong advocate of skepticism and the use of the scientific method. He promoted the search for extraterrestrial intelligence through the SETI project and instituted the sending of messages aboard space probes intended to inform possible extraterrestrial civilizations about human existence. Through his observations of Venus’s atmosphere, he was one of the first scientists to study the greenhouse effect on a planetary scale. He also founded the non-governmental organization The Planetary Society and was a pioneer in the field of exobiology.
Sagan is known for his popular science books and for the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which he narrated and co-wrote. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. Sagan wrote the novel Contact, which served as the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. In 1978 he won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for his book The Dragons of Eden. He died at 62, of pneumonia, after a two-year battle with a rare and serious bone marrow disease (myelodysplasia).
