Christiaan Neethling Barnard was a South African cardiac surgeon noted for performing, in 1967, the first well-documented human-to-human heart transplant. The operation, carried out at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, placed Barnard at the center of global attention: the recipient regained consciousness and lived for several weeks, while subsequent procedures by Barnard extended survival in other patients and spurred clinical research into immunosuppression and surgical techniques. Trained and practicing in South Africa, Barnard deepened his knowledge in the United States, where he encountered cardiac surgery using extracorporeal circulation. Back home, he headed the Experimental Surgery Department at Groote Schuur and developed technical innovations, including modifications to atrial sutures and the heterotopic transplant technique — the “double heart” — which was applied with relative success in the following decades. Beyond his surgical work, Barnard took part in early pediatric research and, after ending his operating career because of problems with his hands, devoted himself to philanthropic initiatives. His career is marked both by a decisive advance in cardiac surgery and by controversies and intense public attention surrounding his achievements.
