Christopher Wren was an English architect whose work shaped the landscape of London in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Trained at Oxford and also active as a mathematician and astronomer, he helped found the Royal Society and translated his scientific interests into technical rigor applied to architecture. After the Great Fire of London (1666) he became supervisor of the city’s rebuilding works, designing and remodelling 51 churches and numerous secular buildings. His most celebrated work is St Paul’s Cathedral, a monumental project that occupied much of his professional life and is recognised as a landmark of European architecture. Wren reconciled classical tradition with experimentation, influenced by travels in Europe and Renaissance models such as Bernini, and he applied empirical methods to his designs. He was knighted in 1673 and held public offices, including seats in Parliament. Although admired later, he faced contemporary criticism over style and competence. He died in 1723 and was buried in the crypt of St Paul’s Cathedral, whose presence is central to his legacy.
