Cleo Laine (born Clementine Dinah Bullock) was an English singer and actress whose work spanned jazz, classical music and musical theatre. Celebrated for her vocal technique and scat ability, she had hits such as "You'll Answer to Me" and recorded acclaimed albums, including duets with Ray Charles and performances of both contemporary and classical repertoire. Over a long international career, Laine appeared in stage productions ranging from dramatic plays to musicals, and gave notable performances at festivals and venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Together with her husband, composer John Dankworth, she founded the Stables, a venue that became important to the British music scene. Her work brought institutional recognition and major awards, including multiple Grammys, the OBE in 1979 and a damehood in 1997. Laine left a legacy as a versatile interpreter who broadened genre boundaries and influenced generations of singers with her vocal range and interpretive inventiveness.
