Daniel Webster was a leading American statesman and orator of the early 19th century, a central figure in the Whig Party during the Second Party System. Hailing from New England, he rose to prominence defending the region’s maritime interests and gradually adopted a nationalist stance that made him one of the country’s most celebrated and influential speakers.
Over four decades in federal politics, he served in the House and the Senate and held the office of Secretary of State in three administrations. In the legislature, Webster helped establish constitutional precedents that strengthened the authority of the federal government; as a diplomat, he negotiated the Webster–Ashburton Treaty, which defined the border between the northeastern United States and Canada.
Regarded as part of the “Great Triumvirate” alongside Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun, Webster worked to preserve the Union and avert the regional conflict that would culminate in the Civil War. His eloquence—most notably in the 1830 debate with Robert Y. Hayne—and his advocacy of economic modernization, the banking system, and industry shaped his political and intellectual legacy.
