Richard Morrow Groat was an American athlete notable for his dual career in basketball and baseball, achieving greatest recognition as a professional baseball shortstop. A graduate of Duke, where he was a two‑time All‑American in both sports and had his number 10 retired, Groat helped lead the baseball team to its first appearance in the College World Series and collected individual honors in the 1950s. In professional baseball he played 14 seasons, amassing 2,138 hits and a career batting average of .286. He was an eight‑time All‑Star, twice a World Series champion, and in 1960 won the National League batting title with a .325 average as well as the league MVP award, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates to the championship. Groat and Bill Mazeroski formed one of the most effective keystone combinations in the club’s history from 1956 to 1962, and he finished among the franchise leaders in games played at the position and in double plays. His dual collegiate and professional careers earned him induction into both college Halls of Fame, securing a rare legacy as one of the most accomplished two‑sport athletes in the United States. Beyond his on‑field achievements, Groat is remembered for defensive consistency, leadership in the clubhouse, and an exemplary transition between distinct athletic careers, leaving a notable mark on mid‑20th‑century American sports.
