Robert Mapplethorpe

Photo: Reproduction

Robert Mapplethorpe was an American photographer whose work shaped New York’s art scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Working mostly in black and white and in the studio, he became known for celebrity portraits, artistic nudes, and images of flowers, as well as self-portraits that explored aesthetics and formalism. His technical and visual production elevated photography to an almost sculptural status, with careful compositions and high contrast. Mapplethorpe became particularly known — and controversial — for documenting the underground BDSM scene and for erotic photographs involving male partners, issues that sparked public debates about art and cultural funding. A significant part of his notoriety derived from this tension between aesthetic freedom and moral controversy, which ultimately broadened the reach of his work. Around the turn of the 1980s he established formal portraits of artists and socialites, as well as series of flowers and female nudes. Before his death in 1989, he founded the institution that came to manage and preserve his archive, helping to promote his work and to finance research on HIV/AIDS. His legacy remains relevant both for the aesthetic qualities of the images and for the cultural and institutional impact it produced.
