Diego Armando Maradona Franco was an Argentine soccer player and coach who played as a midfielder.
Considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, he led Argentina to victory in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, scoring, in the quarter-finals, the Goal of the Century.
He also played in three other World Cups (1982, 1990 and 1994), finishing as runner-up in 1990. The 1994 World Cup marked the end of Maradona's successful national team career, after he tested positive in an anti-doping test in the match against Nigeria (Argentina's second match at the tournament). Because of his notable World Cup performances, in 2002 he was chosen for the FIFA World Cup Dream Team.
As a player, Maradona was revered as a deity in his native country, even inspiring the creation of a church dedicated to him.
His greatest moment was at the 1986 World Cup, which, in popular opinion, was won single-handedly by El Pibe de Oro (the Golden Boy), another of his many nicknames. This World Cup became known as "The Maradona Cup".
