Henry Winkler is an American actor, director, producer, and writer whose career rose to international prominence when he created the iconic Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on the sitcom Happy Days (1974–1984). From that success he established himself as a performer of secondary and eccentric characters, moving between comedy and drama in films and television series over five decades.
In film he has appeared in a range of titles including Heroes, Night Shift, Scream, The Waterboy, Click, and The French Dispatch; on television he regained prominence in roles such as Barry Zuckerkorn (Arrested Development), Eddie R. Lawson (Royal Pains), Dr. Saperstein (Parks and Recreation) and, more recently, Gene Cousineau in Barry — a performance that earned him the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Beyond acting and directing, Winkler has worked as a television producer and coauthored the children’s book series Hank Zipzer, inspired by his own struggles with dyslexia; the series was also adapted for television. The author of memoirs, his public life combines popular entertainment, personal resilience, and a lasting influence on American television culture.
