Ruth Gordon was an American actress and screenwriter whose career spanned theater, radio, film, and television. Beginning on stage in the 1920s, she also distinguished herself as a screenwriter, earning Academy Award nominations for her literary contribution to The Actress (1952) and Adam’s Rib (1959). She attained wide recognition in film from the 1960s onward, most notably for the role of Minnie in Rosemary’s Baby (1968), directed by Roman Polanski, a performance that won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe. Over the course of her career she received multiple nominations from both the Academy and the Golden Globes. Among her best‑remembered work is the creation of the character Maude in Harold and Maude (1971), an elderly, well‑defined figure that broadened her renown for comic and eccentric roles. Her filmography includes titles ranging from drama to popular comedy, maintaining relevance even in films released posthumously.
